An emotional divorce strategy for turning the loudest season of your life into the one that builds the next one.

Most people I sit with are tired in a very specific way. Not the tired that a good night of sleep touches. The kind where you have read the same paragraph of the same email four times and still could not tell anyone what it was asking you for. Where you get to the end of a Tuesday and cannot account for it. Where you are sitting in a parking lot outside an office with your hands still on the wheel, engine off, because the next thing requires a version of you that has not shown up yet.

So let me say the true thing before I say the kind one. If you are getting divorced, it is a lot. It is paperwork and logistics and money and grief arriving out of order, and people asking how you are in the grocery store aisle. I am not going to tell you it is manageable if it does not feel manageable right now.

And here is what I want you to set down right beside that. It is a lot, and you are more than it is.

Everybody hands you a legal strategy. Somebody should hand you the other one, the emotional strategy, because that is the one that actually decides what your life looks like on the far side of this. Not who wins which line item. What you are living inside of in three years. Here is where I would start.

You Are Your Own Guarantee

Divorce runs on other people’s timelines. A date gets moved. A number comes back different than you were told. Somebody changes their mind in the eleventh hour, and your whole month rearranges itself around it.

So most people start waiting. Waiting for the ruling, the settlement, the apology, the explanation that finally makes it make sense. Waiting, sometimes, for a person to arrive and take the weight of it off them.

I understand the wanting. I also want to be honest with you about the math. None of those things are promised to you on any schedule you control. You are the one thing in this that is not in question. You do not need rescuing, and you are not waiting on delivery. You are already here, and you are a sure thing.

You do not need rescuing, and you are not waiting on delivery. You are already here, and you are a sure thing.

That is not a pep talk. It is a strategy. When you stop organizing your inner life around outcomes you cannot schedule, you get back an enormous amount of the energy you have been spending on hold.

You Are Allowed to Make This About You

I watch people spend an entire divorce managing everyone else’s experience of it. Keeping a parent calm. Keeping a coworker comfortable. Keeping the kids from noticing. Keeping their ex from getting difficult. By the end of the day there is no one left tending the person actually going through it.

You are allowed to make your divorce about you. Not at your children’s expense, and not as revenge. Simply as a place you get to occupy in your own life.

In practice it is smaller than it sounds. It is giving yourself two minutes in that parking lot before you start the engine, instead of going straight from the attorney’s office into the pickup line. It is deciding that Thursday nights are yours and defending them like they belong to somebody important, because they do. It is answering the question of what you want before you calculate what it will cost you in other people’s opinions.

When people ask me how to get through a divorce with something left over, this is most of the answer. Not endurance. Occupancy.

Nobody Has Read This File Longer Than You

You are going to be surrounded by people who know things. Attorneys know law. Financial advisors know numbers. All of that matters, and you should want it in the room.

But you are the expert in your own life, and I mean that structurally, not sweetly. Nobody knows your family the way you do. Nobody else can tell which of your kids goes quiet when they are worried and which one gets loud. Nobody else knows what a Sunday needs to feel like in your house for everyone to be okay by Monday. Nobody knows what you want most for your future better than you do.

Bring the professionals in as consultants. Let them advise. Keep the pen.

So bring the professionals in as consultants. Let them advise. Keep the pen. When a recommendation lands wrong in your body, that is information, and you are allowed to say so out loud and ask why. The people worth having around you will respect the question.

Keeping the Peace Is Not the Same as Having Peace

This is the one I would tattoo on the inside of the folder, if I could.

There is a kind of quiet that gets called peace and is really just you, absent. You agree so the conversation ends. You take the worse arrangement because the better one requires a hard week. You get smaller and smaller and everybody says how well you are handling it.

Keeping the peace at the cost of your own peace is not peace. It is a bill, and it comes due later, usually at a moment you did not choose.

I am not telling you to fight. Plenty of things genuinely are not worth it, and choosing not to spend yourself on them is its own kind of clarity. I am asking you to notice the difference between letting something go and giving something up. One leaves you lighter. The other leaves you owing yourself money.

You are the most powerful person in your life. That is not a slogan and it is not conditional on how this resolves. It was true before any of this started and nobody involved has the standing to take it from you.

One Small Thing

Finish this sentence tonight, in one line, in your own handwriting: What I want most for my life three years from now is.

Do not make it a plan. Do not make it reasonable. Put it somewhere you will see it on a bad morning, inside a cabinet door, on the back of your phone case.

Every real decision in front of you gets easier to make once there is something on the other side of it that you actually named.

You are not building the life you want after this is over. You are building it in here, in the middle of the noise, one decision at a time. That work has already started, whether or not today felt like it.
