The Greater Good

On protecting your children above the fight, no matter how it ends between the two of you.

TOBIA BRADLEY, CDC · CERTIFIED DIVORCE COACH

I am going to say something to you today that may be hard to hear in the middle of everything you are carrying.

I know this season is one of the hardest of your life. I know the anger is real. I know the hurt is real. I know that when you look at your co-parent, you may see the person who broke your heart, or broke your trust, or broke the family you thought you were building. I am not going to tell you those feelings do not matter. They do. You are allowed to grieve. You are allowed to be angry.

This has been on my heart for a long time. Over the past twenty-five years, I have sat with more moms and dads than I can count, in the middle of the worst season of their lives, and I have watched this same thing happen again and again. So I am not saying any of this from a distance. I am saying it because I have seen it.

But sweet friend, I need to ask you to do something with all of that. I need you to set it down, just far enough to see the small face watching you.

There Is a Greater Good: Your Child

In the middle of a custody battle, it is easy to lose sight of the one thing that matters most. The fight takes on a life of its own. Winning starts to feel like survival. And somewhere in the noise of lawyers and filings and the endless replay of who did what, the actual child, your actual child, can become almost invisible.

So let me say it plainly. Your child is the greater good. Not the win. Not being right. Not making sure your ex feels every ounce of what you feel. Your child. That is the whole point. That was always the whole point.

A Little Girl in Aiken

I have been thinking about a little girl this week. She was four years old, and she lived not far from here, in Aiken, South Carolina. This summer the whole state searched for her, and the news that came back was the worst news there is. Her own parents have been charged in her death.

I cannot stop thinking about her. And I am not telling you this to be cruel, or to frighten you, or to compare your situation to something so dark. I am telling you because when I hear a story like hers, it puts everything else into a terrible, clarifying light.

Because here is the truth. If your child has a mom and a dad who both love them, you are already holding something that little girl never got to have. You are holding a gift. Two parents who would move mountains for their child. Do you understand how much some children would give for that? Do you understand what a treasure that is?

If You Both Love Them, Then for Goodness Sake, Remember It

I am not asking you to like your co-parent. I am not asking you to forgive them today, or to pretend the marriage did not end for real reasons. I am asking you to remember one thing, and to let it be bigger than all the rest.

If both of you love that child, then that child is the luckiest kind of child there is. Loved from two directions. Wanted by two people. That is the purest love of your life sitting right there, and it is worth protecting at all costs.

So protect it. Cherish it. Guard it the way you would guard anything sacred. Do not let your child become a weapon in a war between the two people who are supposed to be their safest place on earth. Do not make them carry your anger. Do not make them choose. Do not let them become collateral in a fight that was never theirs to begin with.

Stop Fighting When the Only One It Hurts Is the Child

Here is the hard, loving truth I want to leave you with.

When the fighting stops serving your child and starts only serving your hurt, it is time to stop fighting. Not because you lost. Not because they won. But because there is a small person in the middle of all of it, watching, listening, learning what love is supposed to look like from the two of you.

Give them something worth remembering. Give them two parents who, no matter how much they could not stay together, refused to let their child pay the price for it.

You will not regret protecting your child. I promise you that. Years from now, when the anger has cooled and the papers are signed and the dust of all of this has finally settled, you will not wish you had fought harder or hurt them more. You will only be grateful, so grateful, that you kept the greater good safe when it counted.

Cherish them, sweet friend. Protect them at all costs. They are the purest love of your life.

With love,

Tobia
