Letters to Him (The Reset Ritual)

May 13, 2026

Dear Tobia,

I just dropped my kids off at her house. Standard custody exchange, Sunday at 6. She said something at the door, I do not even know what she said, but I felt my jaw lock and my chest go tight. I drove home with both hands gripping the wheel the whole way. By the time I walked through my own front door, I was angry at the dog for jumping on me. Angry at the dog. He did nothing wrong.

This happens every Sunday. Every exchange. I am tired of being a man who comes home angry at his dog.

Holding it together,

Dear Holding It Together,

I am proud of you for writing me. Most men in your shoes do not.

You are not angry at the dog. You are not even really angry at her, not in the way you think. Your body is still standing in that doorway. Your nervous system is still bracing. The drive home was not enough time for any of it to leave you, and so you walked through your own front door still carrying it.

I am going to give you something small that will change this.

I call it the Reset Ritual.

It is one minute. Sixty seconds. You will do it the moment the exchange is over, before you ever start driving.

Here is what I want you to do. After you close the truck door, do not turn the key. Sit. Both hands on the wheel, ten and two. Take three slow breaths. Look straight ahead at whatever is in front of you. The wheel. The dashboard. The road. Just look.

That is it. That is the whole thing.

When you have done that, then you start the truck. Then you drive home.

Three things need to be true about your Reset Ritual:

  • Short. A minute, tops.
  • Physical. Hands on the wheel. Feet on the floor. Body involved.
  • Consistent. The same action, every time.

Sit in the truck. Hands on the wheel. Three breaths. Then drive.

Here is what most men do not know, brother. Your nervous system does not get the memo when the exchange ends. That cortisol, that hum of fight-or-flight, it stays in you. The drive home is not decompression. It is twenty more minutes of carrying it. And then it walks through the door with you and gets mad at the dog.

The Reset Ritual is how you tell your body the moment is over.

Same minute. Same wheel. Same three breaths. Every single time. Your body learns the signal. After enough Sundays, the tension starts to leave you in the cab, not in the kitchen.

This is not about pretending the exchange did not happen. It is about refusing to let it ride home with you and ruin your evening, and the dog’s evening, and everyone else’s.

Try this for the next four Sundays. Just four. The truck. The wheel. The minute. The breath. Then drive.

You are a steady man going through an unsteady season. The minute in the truck is how you stay steady.

With respect,

Tobia
