Letters to Her (The Reset Ritual)

Dear Tobia,
He called this morning. I had been having such a good morning. The kids were getting ready for school, I had my coffee, the sun was coming through the kitchen window. And then his name was on the screen, and I answered.
I do not even remember what the call was about now. I just remember that when it ended, I stood at the counter for a long time with the phone still in my hand. My hands were shaking. The coffee was cold. The good morning was gone.
This happens every single time he calls. How do I keep him from ruining my whole day?
Tired,
Dear Tired,
Oh, sweet friend. I read your letter twice and felt every word of it. You are not broken. Your body is doing exactly what it was built to do, and that is part of the trouble.
I want to give you something small today. It will not stop the calls. It will give you back the rest of your day.
I call it the Reset Ritual.
It is a small, physical action you do every single time you finish a hard interaction with him. Not later. Not before bed. Right then. Right after.
It needs to be three things only:
- Short. Thirty seconds. A minute, tops.
- Physical. Something your body does, not just your mind.
- Consistent. The same action, every time.
Here is what I would tell you if you were sitting across from me right now. When you hang up that phone, walk straight to the kitchen sink. Turn on the cold water. Wash your hands slowly. Feel the cold on your knuckles. Watch the water swirl down the drain.
Or step out onto the porch and feel the air on your face for one full minute. Notice the sky. Notice the trees. Notice anything that is not him.
Or change your shirt. Yes, your shirt. Hang the old one in the closet. Put on a new one. Button it up.
It does not matter which one you pick. What matters is that you do the same one, every time.
Here is what most people do not know, my dear. Your nervous system does not get the memo when the call ends. That cortisol, that hum of fight-or-flight, it stays in your body for hours after he has hung up. Sometimes for days. Your body is not failing you. It is doing its job. But it needs you to tell it the moment is over.
The Reset Ritual is how you tell your body.
When you do the same small action every single time, you train your nervous system to recognize the signal. Wash hands. Step on the porch. New shirt. Whatever you have chosen, it is finished now. You are back in your own life.
Over time, something quiet and beautiful happens. Your shoulders drop faster. Your breath slows on its own. You come back to yourself sooner than you used to. The call still happens, but it no longer takes the whole morning with it.
This is not about pretending the hard thing did not happen. It is about refusing to let it stay in your kitchen, in your body, in your evening, longer than it has any right to.
Pick one small thing this week. Just one. Do it every single time. And see what happens.
You are doing this, sweet friend. Thirty seconds is all you need to come home to yourself.
With love,
Tobia
